DREAM FRAGMENTS
Endre Bálint's Monotypes
This year marks the birth centenary of Endre Bálint (1914–1986). The exhibition of his monotypes provides an opportunity to remember the artist and his oeuvre. Among the most salient features of his art are playfulness and experimentation. Besides painting he tried his hand at many other genres such as prints, especially linocuts and lithographs; also important are his serial montages; the monotype - the subject of the current exhibition - was one of his favourite techniques.
The monotype process has been in use since the mid-17th century. It is an art technique of a transitional nature on the borderline between painting and printmaking. It is, in fact, a planographic process used - as is indicated by the prefix “mono” - to create a single print.
Endre Bálint's pictures are fragments of dreams, fragments of existence. His pictures have dreams, memories, and fragments of time past mixed up with snippets of more current experience. What he wants to develop is a set of the simplest forms, the basic elements of the artist's toolbox, or the letters of his alphabet if you will. It is that fragmented character that lends an appearance of dreamy buoyancy, as of re-emerging memories, and, at the same time, an archaic feel to Bálint's works, an effect enhanced by lyrically threadbare facture. This facture is typical not only of his oils, but also of his prints and especially of his monotypes. The fact that the monotype allowed him to achieve the surface effects he wanted might have been one of the reasons why he liked the technique so much.
“The works of Endre Bálint are works of silence,” says art historian Judit Szeifert in her introduction to the exhibition catalogue. “They are works that radiate and create silence around themselves. With their dream-like buoyancy, they detach us from everyday reality; the lyrically treated surfaces of his images call us to a meditative wandering in the world of memories, of times past; at the same time, they take us away to places outside space and time.”
